PostHeaderIcon Europe:airline Lufthansa Cancels 46 Flights Because of Pilot’s Strike

Holiday Tours asked:

FRANKFURT,Germany -Airline operator Deutsche Lufthansa AG said Wednesday that it has canceled 46 flights because of a pilot strike at its CityLine and Eurowings subsidiaries.

Thomas Jachnow, a spokesman for the Cologne-based airline, said flights out of Stuttgart, Berlin, Duesseldorf, Hamburg and Bremen have been affected, with most of them domestic routes or nearby European destinations.

Union Vereinigung Cockpit said the walkout was called because of an ongoing dispute over wage increases that has been going on for months.

“Because employers haven’t presented a negotiable offer in negotiations that have been going on for months, personnel representatives of all three airlines see no alternative but to declare talks a failure,” Vereinigung Cockpit said in a statement.

Editor’s Note

-Airline disruptions

Those planning to travel by air to or from this destination should check with their airline or travel agent immediately to reconfirm travel arrangements. If your flight has been canceled, request the next available flight. Traffic on roadways leading to airports may be considerably slower than normal.

Airports are likely to become very crowded, and lines will be long. Allow a good measure of extra time to get to the airport, check in and go through security.

-Civil war

If your destination is a country where a civil war or coup d’etat is ongoing or seems likely, register with your embassy as soon as you arrive. Ask the embassy about evacuation plans in the event of emergency. Try to limit your time in the country and have a contingency plan for how you will get out if the airports shut down. If you can’t leave, gather stocks of food and water in your hotel room. Filling the bathtub with water in advance can provide a supply if water supplies are shut off. If the situation deteriorates, try to reach your embassy by phone. Stay in your hotel if you hear gunfire or shelling. Stay away from windows, keep the drapes closed, and sleep in the part of the room that offers the most protection from possible gunfire.

-Demonstrations/protests

Avoid large public gatherings and plan routes around any rallies or demonstrations. Government buildings, such as police stations, and businesses with foreign affiliations can provide a focus for anger and should be avoided. Remain alert to your surroundings and maintain a low profile–don’t do, say or wear anything that would call undue attention to yourself. If violence breaks out, quickly but calmly move away and seek shelter in a hotel or large public building, such as a museum or library. Traffic and public transport may be disrupted; plan alternate routes you can use if roads are closed or blocked, and allow extra time for any travel in the area. If you encounter a roadblock or barricade erected by either demonstrators or security forces, be patient and avoid provoking a confrontation.

-Unauthorized roadblocks

If you encounter a roadblock that does not appear to be manned by uniformed police or you notice a disturbance on the road ahead, turn around and use an alternate route. To minimize the chance of being trapped by a car pulling up behind you, leave some space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. Be prepared to drive away if you notice people approaching your vehicle. Plan before you start your trip where you will go to seek assistance if a car attempts to block you or if you are prevented from reaching your destination.

PostHeaderIcon Traveling Around Boston Can Be Tricky for a First Timer

Chet Val asked:

Having never been to Boston Massachusetts (MA), it seemed like a great time to venture into the unknown for the first time. A world traveler I am not, but a North American traveler I am. I have personally visited major cities across the USA and Canada over the years on both business and pleasure trips but one city I never had an opportunity to enjoy was Boston. The Boston Red Sox and Fenway park became my excuse to spend a weekend in the Boston area. Today’s best bet for hotel reservations are the do-it-yourself websites, of course. Select your arrival and departure dates and simply browse through the available choices. It’s then as easy as bringing out the old credit card and reserving a room.

Hotels in the area of Fenway Park were high priced which leads a value traveler to look outside the general area of the field and simply commute to the game. Would we drive to the game and find parking, take a taxi, or ride the subway? The choice was ours but the hotel staff made it perfectly clear that driving to Fenway and scavenging for parking was not a good idea. They also weren’t impressing on us that a cab was the way to go either. Traffic in downtown Boston is unpleasant and a cab fare could get costly if you find yourself bumper to bumper with thousands of other motorists trying to navigate their way through city streets. That leaves the subway system, called the “T”, as the most recommended form of transportation around the city. Hotel staffers were adamant in recommending the cheap public transportation as the most cost effective and quickest route to our destination.

The Boston subway was no more dirty or scary than any other train system we had ever ridden including New York City and Chicago but at times it was a bit confusing. Buying tickets to ride the “T” was simple… that is, right after we received assistance from a security guard at the station. initially I couldn’t figure the self-service ticket dispenser out, but watching the security guard breeze through made the process seem simple and even as if it were designed for a child. Once on board, the trains are colored to ease transfers if required and everything seemed under control. This was fine until we boarded a train that stopped one station ahead of our destination. An announcement over the sound system declared that all passengers must exit the train. Standing at the map in the station totally perplexed, a polite Boston native offered assistance without even requesting it. The advice proved priceless because the next train came along as expected and we finished our tour underneath Boston successfully.

The traffic in the city is just one reason driving your car through the city streets unpleasant. The Charles River cuts the city into sections and of course none of them are rectangular shaped for simplicity. The odd twists and turns of the roads and highways make it a prime location for first-time driver confusion. The age of the city, which also is one of its strong points from a tourism standpoint, is partly to blame for the unusual layout of roads. Our country’s forefathers apparently weren’t overly concerned with the chore of maneuvering motor vehicles through downtown Boston.

I would gladly bet a Fenway Frank and a cold beer that the city’s tricky streets and elaborate subway system aren’t so bad once you’ve taken some time to become a little more familiar with the local environment. We can’t forget the friendly Bostonians who are also eager to help answer questions and point first-time travelers in the right direction as well.

PostHeaderIcon Mediterranean Travel tips

Shoren Shaer asked:

Mediterranean climate, as the name signifies, is typically the climate of the areas that border the Mediterranean Sea. The wet winter/dry summer seasonality of precipitation is the defining characteristic of this climate. Apart from the areas mentioned above, this type of climate prevails in California, Cape Town area of South Africa, central Chile, and southwestern Australia.

Climatic Elements

Temperature

The temperatures in these areas remain comfortable for most part of the year due to proximity of these lands to large water bodies. Summer temperatures are around 70 to 80 F (21 to 27 C) while winter temperatures are normally above 43 F (6 C). No month is below 32 F (0 C) and at least 3 months have average above 50 F (10 C). Since the summer days are cloudless so the temperature rises sharply in the daytime and falls rapidly at night so the diurnal range is quite large.

Rainfall

The characteristic feature of this type of climate is frequent winter rains and almost a complete summer drought. At San Francisco , California for example, the total annual rainfall is 19 inches (475 mm) of which 18 inches (421 mm ) falls in the winter months and only 1 inch (54 mm) falls in the summer months from May to September; July and August being practically rainless.

In short the Mediterranean Climates enjoy warm sunny days in the summer season and cool wet winters. As the temperature of winters is usually much milder than those of Central Europe or Central US and Canada so these areas are thriving tourist resorts in winter.

PostHeaderIcon Tips for Your First Time Lhasa Travel or Tibet Travel-china Vacations Info

Shane Lee asked:

This article is about the Lhasa travel and Tibet travel. You can find some helpful information in it if you are planning your trip to Tibet now.

Tibet is a mysterious land. It is called the “roof of the world” and there are many beautiful stories about this old-line place. You will not feel this unique attraction until you are really standing here in the land of Tibet.

Here are some tips for your first time travel to Tibet:

1. To get in Tibet by air is not a very good choice. The sudden transition of the altitude will possibly cause the severe altitude sickness, which is a big concern for your Lhasa travel or Tibet travel.

2. The Qinghai-Tibet train began to operate in July 2006. It took less than 48 hours to travel from Beijing to Tibet by train. The cheapest ticket is only 389 RMB .This kind of transportation is better than the air because you can slowly adapt to Tibet’s high altitude instead of a sudden transition of the altitude if you take the plane. The railways are now connected Tibet directly with Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Lanzhou and Xining. You can find more details about the train services to Tibet from our website: Travel2ChinaInfo Dot COM (Lhasa travel, Tibet travel and China vacations Info)

3. You can bring some fruits and bread on your way to Tibet. For the first time travellers to Tibet,  the chance to get some altitude sickness is pretty big and you will not have the appetite for regular food because of this sickness. Most people vomitted after eating meats. Fruits are very good choice in this kind of situation.

4. Some medicines(Like flu medicine, antidiarrheal, woundplast, etc) are very helpful for your Lhasa travel or Tibet travel. Some people said that the flu would cause the severe altitude sickness and kill the first time Tibet travellers. Actually it is not that terrifying to get some cold in Tibet. You need to take some flu medicine immediatly when you have a cold or fever. This will help to alleviate the altitude sickness in Tibet.

5. If you arrive at Lhasa,Tibet on the midnight, the motels near the railway station is a good choice for you. Some people believe that it will consume too much oxygen if you have a shower in Tibet. This is a ridiculous theory from the travellers getting in Tibet by air. You don’t need to worry about this oxygen issue if you got here by train and your body is going to stink after the long time travel if you don’t have a shower.  :-)   The price for these motels is about 70 rmb for a two beds room with hot water.

6. If you don’t like the motels in Tibet, you can choose the Balang hostel, Jiri hostel or Xueyu hotel instead. The advantage is that you can find some friends with common interests there and share the costs for the Tibet trip. Balang hostel: 70 rmb for a two beds room, 90 rmb for a three beds room, 100 rmb for a four beds room. 24 hours hot water and laundry services are available in Balang hostel.

7. It is really cold in the morning and you will need to wear a sweater or jacket. Do not take the risk because you will be in big trouble if you get a cold in Tibet.

8. To get out of Tibet by air is a smart choice. You don’t need to worry about the altitude sickness anymore and there are airline services available every day in Lhasa. The cost is 1200 rmb from Lhasa to Chengdu and the taxi service from the downtown of Lhasa to Lhasa Gongga airport costs 120 rmb.

Shane Lee asked:

This arctile is about the Tibet tours and you can find some helpful information in it if you are planning your trip to Tibet now.

The Main Tibet Tours

Lhasa is the capital of Tibet and is the politics, ecomony and culture center of Tibet. It will take you at least 2 or 3 days to see this unique Tibetan city. I reommend that you plan a 7 days’ trip for your Lhasa travel . 2 or 3 days for the “Sky Lake” and 3 to 4 days for Shannan or Rigazhe. You can experience the unique culture of Tibet in these areas. What attract millions of tourists here is the religious culture of Tibet and it will be a pity to miss these traditional Tibetan places if you are alreay in Tibet. There are six notable areas for tourists in Tibet and they are: Rigazhe, Shannan, Naqu, Ali, Linzhi and Changdu. Here are the most popular tours for your Tibet travel:

(1). Lhasa – Rigazhe – Lazhi – Zhangmu. This is a traditional tour for the foreign tourists and is recommended by most Chinese travel agents. You can visit the second largest city of Tibet – Rigazhe in this trip for your Tibet travel. The brilliant Zhishilunbu temple and Banchan Palace is in Rigazhe. Other attractions in this tour are: Yaluzhangbu River, Shaga Temple, Mount Forest. The whole trip will take 8 to 12 days.

(2). Lhasa – Rigezhe – Lazhi – Cuoqin – Gaizhe – Geji – Shiquan River – Pulan. This tour is not an easy one. But it is very attractive. You will go throught the Aligaoyuan(it is called the roof of the world), Mount Sanmubati, Snow Mountain Balingang, Mysterious Guge Palace. Now this tour is becoming the most popular one in Tibet travel because you can experience the unique culture and natural scenes of Tibet in it. Although it is a tough trip, it is still the first choice for thousands of adventure travellers. This tour takes 3 weeks.  ( I will choose this trip for my Tibet travel, it is an exciting one )

(3). Lhasa – Jiangmu – Rigezhe – Lhasa. This tour will go through the Qushui Bridge, Mount Gangbala, Yangzhuoyong lake. When you arrive Jiangzhi city, you can visit the famous Baiju Temple(It is also called Wanfota). This trip focuses on the Tibetan religion and culture and the total time it will cost is about 2-4 days.

(4). Lhasa – Shannan. Shannan is called the “Birth place of the Tibetan nation” and it was the center of an old civilization named “Yalonghegu”. The attractions of this trip are: Shangye Temple – the first temple of Tibet, Changzhu – the fist Buddha hall of Tibet, Suodang – the first farmland of Tibet, Yabulakang – the first palace of Tibet. They are all telling tourists the old Tibetan culture and history. This tour is mainly about the history of Tibet and 2-3 days will be enough for it. ( A good choice for your Lhasa travel or Tibet travel if you are interested in the Tibetan history )

(5). Lhasa – Naqu – Germu. This is a trip along the Qingzang road and focuses on the scenes of the Tibetan grasslands and snow mountains. The main attractions for this trip are: Chubu Temple, Yangbajing, Namucuo Lake, Mount Lianqingtanggula and Naqu. This trip is about 1200 kilometers long.

(6). Lhasa – Linzhi – Shannan – Lhasa. The most attractive place for this tour is Linzhi. It is called a place like Heavan in Tibet. The famous Lalvzhangbu Valley is right here in Linzhi. It is a very attractive place for the scientists and adventure travellers. The total length of this trip is about 2000 kilometers and usually it will take 4-7 days.( I like the beautiful Linzhi.
