Galadriel Anderson asked:

In other words it is quite uneven and constantly changing like the smoke from a flickering flame. This can cause issues for re-entry vehicles and it will be something that we need to address in the future, especially as commercial and private enterprise space flight comes forth in the future.

You see, we know from our weather radar systems used for general and commercial aviation that it is possible to see flare ups or areas where density variation in the upper atmosphere is most prevalent, and a space craft does have a little bit of control just prior to getting into the thick of things as it comes back into orbit. By avoiding these areas or steering around them, they might find pockets where the density is much less and this could provide a better precise re-entry point, by simply changing lateral trajectory a few degrees.

The further a space craft comes from on its return mission the more critical re-entry can be. If a space craft comes from Mars, or from a Lunar Colony, it’s much more serious than the space shuttle returning from the ISS.

Once this is done, we know that the critical time of super-heat on the bottom of the space craft’s heat shield could be reduced by up to a minute. That could result in a huge increase in safety factor, and since we have such technology, why not use it for this purpose.

Perhaps, this is an area where we might pursue additional research and come up with a solution that makes sense, then duly share that information with all nations in an effort to assist the future of manned space flight in the safest way. Please consider all this.
